Selenium

 Quote:

Se stands for "super element"!

Status update:

10/8/13- Hey... I'm so overworked! I am busy working in your thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones that make your metabolism go! If your diet is going well, you can thank me!

10/9/13- At first, my discoverer thought I was tellurium, but I am so much better than that element! It's not like she can color glass or be used in stainless steel or do any of the cool stuff I can!

10/9/13- Wham! Pow! Hey you guys....I'm a little preoccupied in this battle going on between me an free radicals, which can damage your cell membranes! I also protect your body from joint inflamation and infection, plus, I play a role in reproduction.

10/10/13-You know what? Those noble gasses think they are so noble and that they are better than the rest of us! So what if I only have 6 valence electrons? I never wanted to bond with you anyway!

10/25/13- I like to have a balanced life! Having balanced chemical equations is key! For example: Se8+8O2--> 8SeO2

10/29/2013- Sticks and stones may break my bones but you can NEVER destroy me! (You can also never create me according to the law of conservation of matter!)

Overview:

My name is Selenium, Se for short. I am a nonmetal chalcogen.  My weight is 78.96. I like to think I don't look a proton over 76 amu. I might be poisonous in large amounts but don't let that fool you; I'm a real sweetheart.

Fun Fact About Me: If you shine light on me, I become more conductive!

Information:

Relationship Status:

In a relationship

Primary Relationship:

I'm in a serious relationship with flourine! We form hexaflouride selenium together! We make an awesome pair, or should I say....quadruplet!

network: nonmetal

nonmetal

valence electrons:

I have 6 valence electrons. I guess you could say I am "available" to bond

reactivity: I'm very reactive, especially with oxygen, flourine,  chlorine and bromine, and iodine.
state of matter: I am naturally a solid, it's just who I am!
Location on Periodic Table: Group 16, Period 4

Birthday:

1817

Hometown:

I was discovered in Sweden, and my manager, who brought me out of obscurity, is Jons Jacob Berzulius.

Movies:

Lethal Vows- So what if i was suspected of murder in the movie? I was the star of the show! I also was the hero in the movie Evolution, where I saved earth from becoming over run by extra terrestrials.

Activities & Interests:

I love to melt at 220.5 degrees, and boil at 685 degrees Celsius,so don't push me, gee that's hot! My density is 4.809 grams per cubic centimeter but if you call me "dense" you'll be sorry.

Places:

10/9/13- If you see red colored glass, know I probably gave it that pretty color and you'll see me there.

10/9/13- Hey! I'm just chilling in fish and crab

10/10/13- If you need me, I will be in liver, wheat, and poultry too!
10/10/13- You can sometime find me being separated from copper ore. They might tear us apart, but they can't break our love!
10/26/13- Hey I'm in hexaflouride selenium with flourine! Se8+24F2---> 8SeF6
11/5/13- Hey would it be counted as two timing if I was also in diselenium dichloride? Se2+Ch2--->2SeCh

I am used in some cameras because of my conductivity properties when I am exposed to light. I think this picture really captures me in my best "light".

You can tell allot about me from this picture. I may look hard or cold but I am all about caring.

I am in pecans and cashews,

 I guess I am a little nuts!

This is me among my many friends, I guess you can say I'm pretty popular.

This is some selenium rich yeast that people use for their health. I am organic!

Can you shine a little light into my life?

selenium said

at 10:08 am on Oct 26, 2013

No, but if you shine bright light onto me, I conduct electricity better!

My photoelectric properties enable me to measure light; Think: the light exposure of a photograph. The light sensetive selenium in some cameras allows the device to regulate the amount of electric power produced by the camera and to adjust shutter speed. My electric resistance decreases with the more light that shines on me.The ratio of light on me to electric current I can transmit stays constant. This ability is sometimes used by light meters. This special talent of mine was found out by Willoughby Smith in 1873.

Oh Selenium, your beauty knows no limits. You are the very definition of perfection. Come to me my sweet Selenium. We can be happy together. I have a stable job at the reactor. We can make little diselenides. I know I have already been married with kids before, but i know this baby. You and i will would be happy. So please my sweet, wonderful Selena. Come be my treasure.

Yes, Yes, A million times yes! We do make an awesome compound. The hafnium diselenides that we form are amazing.

Selenium can you react with me?

selenium said

I believe so. I heard through the grape vine that we create molybdenum diselenide.
