Status update:

12/09/1839- I was finally discovered by a guy named Carl Mosander in Sweden! My name roots from the Greek word of "lanthanein" which means "to lie hidden."

5/24/1902- I love being used for science. I am usually used as a catalyst, an additive to glass, for carbon lightning, and as an ignition element.

9/26/1974- I was finally approved to be a medication for renal failure in the kidneys.

11/4/2013- I have gone in a relationship with chromium! Together we make lanthanum chromite which is used for solid oxide fuel cells. I hope things will be awesome between the two of us!

11/4/2013- When I go through a chemical reaction, I don't lose or gain any mass when I am reacting with another element. We are still the same just in a different form.

Overview:

I am a silvery white metal.

I am malleable, ductile, and soft enough to be cut with a knife.

When I am exposed to air, I oxidize rapidly.

I am also one of the most reactive of the rare-earth metals.

Information:

Relationship Status:

In a metallic bond.

Primary Relationship:

Chromium

network:

Metal

valence electrons:

reactivity: Very reactive, oxidizes with air, reacts with water
state of matter:  Solid
Location on Periodic Table: Group: 3 Period: 6

Birthday:

1839

Hometown:

In Sweden by Carl Mosander

Movies:

The Lanthanum Before Time

Activities & Interests:

I love being mixed with cerium and other rare earth metals to create mischmetal, which is great for creating the spark effects in movies.

Another interest of mine is to be added to steel to increase its malleablilty, resistance to impact, and its ductility.

Also, I enjoy being used in swimming pools to absorb phosphates that are in the water.

One of my favorite activities is being used for a medication for renal failure.

I react with many element groups such as halogens, acids, air, and water.

I do not react with bases however.

Places:

3/15/1989- Checking in at my home of Sweden!

7/09/1995- Checking in at the Sun.  Even though there's not much of me here, I'll find a little bit of company.

9/02/2001- Checking in in the Universe. There is so much to explore! Better start now.

11/4/2013- Checking into one of my chemical equations I'm in : 2La(s) + 3Br2(g) → 2LaBr3(s)

Sparking with cerium and some other of my rare earth metal friends in a mischmetal block. We usually get together like this for making spark effects for movies.

Polished this camera lens with oxygen and myself to make it more refractive and shiny.

Bound with iron to create cast iron pipes for transmission of water.

Hanging out with boron to create electron emitters for an electric microscope.

Being combined with cerium to create scintillation crystals.

Is this element toxic?

Usually, I have a very low to moderate level of toxicity. However I should still be handled with care because I can sometimes cause pneumoconiosis, a disease that affects the lungs, which can be caused by breathing in my dust.

I hear you react with halogens! I wish I did.

What elements do you react with and do any of them explode?

lanthanum said

I can react with various elements like oxygen, hydrogen, and all of the halogens such as Iodine, Fluorine, Chlorine, and Bromine. I not not explode with any elements but I am highly flammable.

Why is Lanthanum considered a "rare earth metal" even though is not that rare?

lanthanum said

at 5:27 pm on Nov 4, 2013

I am considered a rare earth metal because compared to common earth metals, I am much more rare. Also, mining me is tough because it is difficult, time consuming and expensive.

How would Toyota use Lanthanum?

lanthanum said

at 5:31 pm on Nov 4, 2013

Even though I am used in many Toyota cars, many people do not recognize me. I am used in many hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius as a battery know as a nickel-metal hydride battery. The metal in the battery is me!

I'm in a relationship with chromium! They were the perfect match for me! Together we bond with a metallic bond and create lanthanum chromite.
